On October 7, 2001, Al-Jazeera burst onto the international scene when it was the only news outlet to provide live footage of the start of the U.S. bombing campaign in Afghanistan. Shortly after that, Cursor compiled an archive of articles that explored various aspects of Al-Jazeera's impact:

Since then, Cursor has continually updated the archive to track media coverage of Al-Jazeera. The archive ranks high in Internet searches for Al-Jazeera, resulting in a traffic spike whenever the station is in the news. Following its March 23 airing of Iraqi state television's video of captured U.S. POWs, Al- Jazeera became the most-seached term on the Internet. This resulted in more than 1 million visitors to Cursor's archive in a one-week period. Many of those people seemed to confuse the archive for Al-Jazeera, or, thought that there was some affiliation (which there isn't) between Cursor and Al-Jazeera. What follows are the e-mails that Cursor has received since late March. Most are from people who think that they are writing to Al-Jazeera, while some are e-mails to be forwarded. They've been separated into three categories: The good, the bad and the (very) ugly.

I'm an American citizen living in Mexico and am sending this e-mail, not because I'm pro or con about this war, but because I am a believer in the truth. I truly feel that Aljazeera news, tv got a bad rap from the U.S media and the government. The coverage was no worse than what I see other channels doing (photos of Iraqi soldiers, children, etc.) I hope that I will be able to at least read real press (truth)on-line soon from the Aljazeera web site. I believe in freedom of speech and press, this is a constitutional right which seems to be in the interim of being taken away from Americans lately, with the Patriot Act , propaganda, etc.
If Aljazeera needs signatures on a petition for congress in order to get back on-line I will be more than willing to sign. War is never nice for either side so we should at least get the truth, which is never able to be hidden forever, so keep the good work up.

I was just looking around for the Al Jezeera web site, but I guess that the English version was cracked or is not ready yet.
While I am not all that fond of pictures of our dead, if the pictures did indeed show that our boys were executed, then I think that perhaps it was worth it. Indeed, it validates everything that President Bush and our Generals have said about Saddam Hussein and his thugs. I only hope that we can capture him and his "boys" so that we can give them a nice fair War Crimes Trial and then hang em with a new rope.

I cannot read Arabic, but would appreciate if your site can forward a message to Al Jazeera to apologize on behalf of those who are misguided (assuming they are US citizens) and do not live what our Constitution upholds and ultimately what our soldiers d fight for, even if a President does or does not. The whole foundation of the United States and the heart of the people do support the freedoms of the individual and entity, including the right to free expression. Ironically, in our country (although many including myself do not agree with the viewpoints expressed) we defend the right of the Nazis and Klu Klux Klan to exist and express themselves, in addition to such groups as the Ayrian Nation. It seems quite hypocritical to then act against freedom of expression elsewhere. The unfortunate part is that it is probably someone who is in, or supports one of the above groups who did this. As an American, proud of our Constitution, I apologize on their behalf.

I am one of those Americans who began searching for the other side of the argument by reading a sampling of what the Middle Eastern media is saying about this war.

I've watched the owner and 2 reporters and they seem to give the most balanced reporting for all the Arab Newspapers. Al Jazeera must accept, without whining, that which comes with the territory. This includes protests, disagreement, criticism and dissent. That's what freedom is all about. If you want to piss in the pond with the big boys you must take the same lumps. This includes being seen as having an Arab bias to the news and an Arab mentality to the news. As you know there is not a lot of credibility in the Western world after we heard the Iraqi minister of disinformation, lies, falsehoods and general ranting and raving. This guy has provided a tiny insight into the Arab world and into how Arabs think and what they believe. The truth seems to matter little if at all and you (Al Jazeera) may be considered in somewhat the same light. It's a cultural thing.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I don't know who to ask this of, since the Al Jazeera website is supposedly down. I simply want to ask somebody,anybody who is connected to that network one question. They're angry about the death of one of their journalists, even though they knew they were in a war zone. I'm not writing to defend or attack that situation, but rather the outcome of it.
I want somebody there to ask somebody with Al Jazeera this: Have they ever, EVER in the history of their network said anything positive about a person who was American, about America itself, or anything positive relating to some situation or circumstances with the US or its citizens were ever involved?
I have truly wanted to understand the Arab world, and I can guarantee many Americans would like to also, but whenever I've heard anything out of the Al Jazeera reports, its always anti-American. Like many Americans, I would gladly want to give Arabs an open ear, if I didn't always hear about how I'm a "zionist," an "infidel," or some sort of satanic worshipper bent on killing innocent Arabs.
Should you have any connections to people with Al Jazeera, could you please ask them this? I would be curious also what their reaction was to the September 11th tragedies. I still have memories of what they said about the Shuttle disaster.
